The Experimental Pneumology department at Hannover Medical School mainly concentrates on the pathobiology of bacterial and mycobacteriallung infections. Various basic-research-oriented and translational-oriented problems are looked at in-vitro in infection models, as well as in-vivo in preclinical infection models. Ongoing projects are focussed on beneficially harnessing the intensified recruitment of professionalphagocytes to improve the ability of the lungs to fight infections caused by inhaled bacterialpathogens.We also work on the significance of neutralserine proteases for pulmonary defence to fight infections caused by mycobacterial pathogens. In addition, we also investigate the molecular mechanisms of Streptococcus pneumoniae-induced lung infections in mice. Our department places a high priority on developing and educating young researchers in the medical and natural science disciplines, and play a very strong role in the molecular-medicine and pathobiological related development programmes at the medical school. Interested medical and biology students are welcome at any time to come along to the department and find out more about our research activities.

In January of 1983, Dr. Erwin Weßling laid the foundation for what is today the Dr. Weßling Group. The first site, the "Chemical Laboratory Dr. E. Weßling" was a restored windmill dating to the 18th century - located in the heart of the Muenster region. From the beginning, the name Dr. Weßling stood for the same high-quality analytical laboratory practice as it does today. These services were soon complemented by a consulting society: "Dr. Weßling Consulting Engineers" (Dr. Weßling Beratende Ingenieure [WBI]) carries out the expert analysis and evaluation of all collected results. As part of an expansion of the group's location network, the "Chemical Laboratory Dr. E. Weßling" was founded in Hannover ten years ago.

BioDoc - Biomedical Diagnostics

The laboratory's work focuses on veterinary diagnostics of infectious diseases - mainly viral infections - in small laboratory animals (mouse, rat, hamster, rabbit and guinea pig). Our clients are medical and veterinary research institutions which perform animal experiments. These are university institutes, Max Planck institutes, the pharmaceutical industry and other research organisations that submit blood samples (i.e. serum/plasma samples) only. These samples are analysed to determine the titre of antibodies against specific infections of the animals. The objective of these tests is to make certain that these animal species are free of infectious diseases and thus suitable for use in animal experimentation.

It has special competence in regeneratable implants which are seeded with the cells of the recipient so that they become completely integrated within the recipient. These implants are basedon biological connective tissues which are processed using patented techniques. The corVCD vessel coupling device quickly creates a permanent coupling between the prosthesis and the vessel. The use of corVCD can significantly reduce the length of an operation and lower the post-operative complicationrate.

Toxogen GmbH (toxogen) was founded in 1997 as a spin-off from fromInstitute for Toxicology at the Hannover Medical School. It works on the main research topics and key areas of expertise of its founders. The field of research comprises the development of novel pharmacologically active proteins derived from clostridial neurotoxins. These are bacterial pathogenicity factors which act via a very specific modification of signal transduction between peripheral nerves and their target organs. Analytical methods were developed which make possible the measurement of the activity of clostridial neurotoxins at picogram concentrations. Furthermore, a reliable test system was established for measuring neutralizing antibodies directed against botulinum toxin types A and B. These may form in patients treated with the respective neurotoxin over an extended period of time.

toxogen was based in Langenhagen, near Hannover, until June 2008, and now works in laboratories rented from the Hannover Medical School. As part of a business expansion, toxogen also moved into other laboratories in the Hannover Medical Park in July 2008. The company headquarters was transferred to Hannover at the same time.

As a consequence of the merger in 2009 with Phonak, the world’s largest manufacturer of hearing aids, under the umbrella of Sonova AG, AdvancedBionics has access to leading technical expertise in the fields of acoustics, micro-systems technology, andcomplex audiological algorithms.

AdvancedBionics has run an independent research centre in Hannover since 2008, that coordinates the research and pre-development studies undertaken by Advanced Bionics in Europe. The direct proximity of the European Research Center to VIANNA and the Ear Nose and Throat Clinic of the Hannover Medical School intensifies the successful cooperation that has been established ever since AdvancedBionics was established.

The focus of the current 12 research cooperation projects is on signal processing for cochlea implants, electrode design, and the further development of the actuators used in middle ear implants for the direct acoustic stimulation of the cochlea.

Our systems are the foundation for new generations of implants that can treat a variety of neurologically related diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system.
